PH has SE Asia’s highest share of ‘savvy’ online shoppers — report

The Philippines has the highest proportion of so-called “savvy” online shoppers in Southeast Asia, with these consumers spending substantially more each month than general shoppers, according to a 2026 e-commerce report.

The “2026 eCommerce Savvy Shopper Report: Philippines, released by Lazada and Cube, classified 36% of Filipino shoppers as “savvy,” the highest share among six Southeast Asian markets covered by the study. Another 22% were classified as “near-savvy,” bringing the combined share to 58%.

The report said savvy Filipino shoppers spend 47% more per month than general shoppers, also the highest spending uplift among the markets surveyed. It estimated the resulting “weighted spending gap” in the Philippines at $3.3 billion in 2026.

Indonesia had a lower 28% share of savvy shoppers and a 19% spending uplift, while Vietnam recorded 25% and 44%, respectively. Thailand had a 22% savvy-shopper share, Malaysia 20%, and Singapore 9%.

The report defines shopper “savviness” across four areas: verification, or determining whether a product is the right choice; value optimization; digital fluency in using online shopping tools; and confidence and protection when transactions encounter problems.

The findings suggest that price alone does not determine how these consumers shop. Across Southeast Asia, 43% said they were willing to wait longer for delivery, 41% would spend more effort finding a deal, and 36% would compare offers.

By comparison, only 14% were willing to give up authenticity signals and 13% would sacrifice purchase protection, indicating that consumers were less willing to trade trust and safeguards for lower prices. :

The report also found a notable pattern in the Philippine market involving younger and older consumers.

“The Philippines is the only Southeast Asian market where both Gen X and Gen Z shoppers are equally willing to pay more for stronger purchase protection.”

The report described trust as a “cross-generational cultural trait, not just a younger-generation behavior.”

Lazada said it is responding to these shopping priorities through official stores and LazMall for product authenticity, vouchers and rewards for value, returns and refunds for consumer protection, and AI-powered discovery and recommendation tools.
