SEC offices to get e-waste collection bins under PLDT-Smart deal

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has partnered with PLDT and Smart Communications to collect used and broken electronic devices from employees at its offices nationwide.

Under the agreement announced on Oct. 20, PLDT and Smart will install e-waste collection bins under their “Be Kind. Recycle.” program and conduct activities to promote proper disposal and recycling of electronic waste.

Collected devices will be turned over to the companies’ authorized e-waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities for handling in accordance with applicable environmental and human rights laws and regulations.

The initiative forms part of the SEC’s Sustainability Week Program, which includes efforts to promote environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting among companies.

PLDT and Smart said their e-waste program has established more than 200 collection points nationwide through partnerships with commercial establishments, schools, enterprises, cooperatives, local government units, and other organizations.

Since 2023, the companies have collected and recovered 42.5 metric tons of e-waste, which they estimate has helped avoid 17.3 metric tons of carbon emissions.

SEC chairperson Francis Lim said the commission supports incorporating sustainability into corporate practices.

PLDT and Smart Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan said the partnership would help address the environmental impact of electronic waste and support the transition to a circular economy.

The SEC partnership is intended to provide employees and stakeholders with collection points for used electronics and raise awareness of proper e-waste disposal.
