The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has required Smart Communications to submit an official report on the status of its compliance to the SIM Card Registration Law after noting the proliferation of unregistered SIM cards that are being used in text scams and in various forms of cybercrimes.
The NPC said it has observed alarming instances wherein certain individuals, ostensibly acting as agents of malevolent entities, are enticing unsuspecting individuals with monetary offers as much as P1,000 in exchange for SIM cards that have been registered.
Globe said it has logged over 1.5 million SIM registrations as of Dec. 28, while Smart Communications said it has received close to 400,000 successful applications. Dito Telecommunity, meanwhile, said subscribers who successfully register their SIM cards will receive 2GB bonus data.
Following the release of the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of the SIM Registration Act, Globe and Smart Communications have announced that they will launch their online SIM registration platforms and start selling new SIMs in deactivated mode.
Senate president Juan Miguel "Migz" F. Zubiri and House speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez led the ceremonial signing on Tuesday, Oct. 4, of the first enrolled bill of the 19th Congress -- the SIM Registration Act (Senate Bill No. 1310 and House Bill No. 14).
The “SIM Registration Act” is the first legislative measure that passed the approval of the bicameral panel of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 19th Congress.
