PH-UK initiative allows students to earn double degrees while in PH

By Edd K. Usman

The United Kingdom and the Philippines will finally implement their Joint Development of Niche Programmes (JDNP) educational partnership this 2018.

British Embassy Manila deputy chief of mission Nigel Boud (middle, standing) is joined by university officials from United Kingdom and the Philippines whose schools are participants in the Joint Development of Niche Programmes (JDNP) Transnational Education or TNE

The British Council and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) signed the JDNP partnership agreement in 2016 with the objective of providing Filipino students access to UK postgraduate programs.

Starting in 2018, recipients of the JDNP now have the opportunity to earn Philippine-UK double and dual degrees while in the Philippines. They have spent, however, some time in the UK part as part of the arrangement.

Being developed presently for the JDNP are several programs involving private and state academic institutions in the country and their UK partner universities.

British Embassy Manila deputy chief of mission Nigel Boud led the two-day UK-Philippines Transnational Education Conference with the theme “UK-Philippines Now” at the Makati Shangri-La Manila Hotel last February 16.

He described the JDNP as “one of the most exciting areas of UK-Philippines cooperation.”

The diplomat said the partnership will have 18 joint postgraduate programs, which the Philippines and UK universities will offer jointly.

“These programs, in exciting new areas of study, like data analytics and robotics engineering, which are not currently offer in the Philippines, will provide significant new academic opportunities in areas identified as supporting the economic development in the country,” said Boud.

Furthermore, he sees the partnership as the catalyst for a long-term partnership between the two countries in the field of higher education.

The British official lauded CHED and the British Council as well as the universities and college in the two countries for making the new partnerships possible, he added.

Boud took pride in the UK’s having four of the world’s top 10 universities and 16 in the top 100. The UK, he emphasized, is the global leader in TNE (transnational education).

Boud noted the huge potential of the Philippines with its young and ambitious population who wants to seize the opportunities offered by the global economy. “The UK is committed to a long-term partnership that helps them to realize their dreams,” he said.
