By Espie Angelica A. de Leon

Drone technology is soaring to greater heights in the Philippines ? literally and figuratively — with the local launch of the latest products from drone maker DJI. The China-based aerial and imaging firm has partnered with MSI-ECS Philippines for the distribution of its products in the local market.

Designed for both industrial and recreational purposes, the high-performing and easy-to-use products are the DJI Mavic Pro, Phantom 4 Pro, and Osmo Mobile Silver.

Speaking at the media launch held at Enderun Atrium in McKinley Hill in Taguig on April 21, DJI Asia Pacific associate director of communications Kevin On said that aside from recreation, the drones may be used in a disaster response, agriculture, broadcasting, advertising, tourism, construction, real estate, wildlife monitoring, sports, archaeology, surveying and mapping, education, and insurance.

?There are a lot of situations where drones can make existing jobs a lot safer,? said Jan Gasparic of DJI?s strategic partnerships and business development. ?A lot of the infrastructure today involves people having to get up to dangerous places. A lot of that work can be done from the ground using drones.?

The Phantom 4 Pro features a camera with a 1-inch 20-MP CMOS sensor which can record 4K/60FPS video and Burst Mode stills at 14 FPS. It is the first DJI camera to use a mechanical shutter which avoids rolling shutter distortion.

It also has two optical cameras in front, another two optical cameras at the back, and infrared sensing systems on the sides. The cameras can see objects 30 meters away such as walls and other obstructions, allowing the drone to stop, hover or fly over such obstruction.

Its other features include tracking, enhanced RTH function, better video processing, a remote control with an integrated screen and dual frequency of 5.8, flying time of up to 30 minutes, and a top speed of 27 kilometers per hour.

The Mavic Pro, on the other hand, is a compact model with a 5.5-inch display and a 1920 x 1080 resolution. It comes with five optimum cameras and is equipped with an Obstacle Navigation System, Vision Positioning System, GPS+GLONASS Navigation System, and IMU+GPS Redundancy System.

Its controller is smaller. A bonus feature is that the operator may also use his smartphone to control the drone.

Mavic Pro also has a tripod feature which is ideal for beginners and those filming in tight spaces as it decreases speed, reduces stick control, and allows for better precision.

Another feature is its Sport Mode of 65 km/hour and a flight time of up to 27 minutes. With its compact size, the drone can also be easily folded.

?Mavic Pro has opened doors to a whole array of customers,? said On, adding that drones used to be only for techies and enthusiasts.

Meanwhile, the Osmo Mobile Silver is perfect for capturing panoramic views. It is capable of long exposures and equipped with active track and motion time lapse. It also sports the Beautify Mode feature which brightens photos, thus allowing the subject to look better in the picture.
