Around 750 women, all wives of Grab’s top drivers, attended a program that offered courses in direct selling, financial literacy, and livelihood workshops.
Launched on August 13 in Libis, Quezon City, the “Grab Misiskolar” program was held in partnership with other companies.
Courses in the one-day event covered educational lessons on direct selling and starting one’s business (Avon Philippines), comprehensive educational program on franchising, producing, and reselling ice cream (Tristan’s Ice Cream Candy), perfume-making (Union Bank), baking (Lendr), family planning and importance of women’s health (Generika), making of fresh fruit juice in a bottle (Blended Juice), and “Hilot” 101 lessons (Phoenix Petroleum/Bayan Foundation).
Participants also attended a seminar on financial literacy, spending habits, and practical tips about their every day money given by Union Bank, Lendr, and Sun Life Philippines (Angat Pilipino Coalition and Truly Rich Club).
The program will initially cover their top 1000 drivers — 750 in Metro Manila and its nearby suburbs and 350 in Cebu, said Ana Liziel Cosgayon, Grab Philippines marketing manager for supply. The launch in Cebu will be held on August 27.
These livelihood programs are seen to help the wives augment their husbands’ incomes after Grab learned that most of its 20,000 accredited drivers are the sole breadwinners of their households, Cosgayon said.
“Graduates” of the training-workshops who are able to produce products will be enlisted in this year’s ‘Noel Bazaar’ to showcase and sell their products,” said Cosgayon.
Meanwhile, all these offerings form part of the ride-hailing firm’s “holistic” strategy “to financially empower the families of our Grab community and ultimately foster their success,” said Grab Philippines country manager Brian Cu, who led the event’s program’s launch.
“We believe that through education of our drivers’ wives in financial management — from earning, saving, handling money, to starting up a business — we will be able to create a sustainable program that will help our partners achieve more.”
