Senators Chiz Escudero and Allan Peter Cayetano are backing the proposal to expand and strengthen the role of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), including the power to block inappropriate contents on video streaming platforms that do not fit the moral values of Filipinos.
Sen. Grace Poe also suggested requiring streaming services to secure legislative franchises before they are allowed to operate in the country like cable and broadcast companies.
Sen. Franklin Drilon said instead of regulating Netflix and other streaming platforms, the MTRCB should continue to allow them and other media to self-regulate content.
Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian has urged the MTRCB to exercise prudence in classifying movies and contents being streamed on different platforms, including online streaming providers like Netflix and Amazon Prime.
