Davao eyeing to add 5,000 new IT-BPO jobs in 2013

The southern city of Davao is expecting its booming information technology-business process outsourcing (IT-BPO) industry to generate about 5,000 jobs this year.

Bert Barriga, president of ICT Davao, an umbrella organization of IT groups in Davao City, said the current 16,000 IT-BPO workforce in the city may balloon to 21,000 by year?s end.

Barriga said that a number of call center operators are locating in the city, although he refused to name the would-be investors. One of the companies will be located at the soon-to-be-completed Abreeza Corporate Center, he said.

Last year, the city added 5,000 jobs to the IT BPO industry with the opening of companies such as VXI Global whose contact center is located at Robinsons Cybergate in Bajada district.

VXI Global, which employs about 3,500 agents, occupies a 5,000-square meter facility in the city.

?Many existing companies here are adding people,? Barriga said, noting the expansion of contact centers and the coming of new locators have heightened the demand for IT workers in the city.

Barriga said that ICT Davao is looking at having 35,000 IT-BPO workforce in the city by 2015. ? PIA-11
