More than three years after suffering a debilitating stroke, technology and gaming journalist Relly Carpio passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the age of 39.

Relly de Guzman Carpio (1975-2014)

Carpio’s wife, Philippines Graphic associate editor Alma Anonas-Carpio, said in a Facebook post that he died after going into a “respiratory and cardiac arrest”.

From having a hefty physique during his days as an IT writer, Carpio became skinny and bed-ridden after a massive stroke hit him in 2011. The journalists group Cyberpress, in which he was an officer at that time, staged a benefit concert to raise funds for the expenses he incurred at the ICU of the Makati Medical Center.

Though he remained confined to bed upon returning to their home in Makati City, many thought that he was on the road to recovery as he was slowly regaining his health in the last couple of years.

Carpio, whose last gig was managing editor of gaming site Playground.PH, was a non-conformist journalist. In his earlier years as a writer of the campus paper of Miriam College, he and his fellow student journalists wrote sexually provocative articles that prompted school officials to expel them. The students fought back and the case reached the Supreme Court, but the tribunal unfortunately ruled against their favor.
