Baguio city council declines application of digital TV operator

By Aldwin Quitasol

BAGUIO CITY ? The city council of Baguio has turned down the application of a media company to operate a digital television broadcast station in the city.

The councilors also passed a resolution expressing disappointment on the failure of the officials of the applicant GHT Network to appear in a council hearing at least six times.

A copy of the resolution will be forwarded to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and GHT Network, which can still appeal the council?s decision.

The council said the failure of the officials to appear in the meetings only showed the company?s lack of interest in its application. Notices were sent to Jenny Lynne T. Fullante, legal counsel of GHT Network, but these went unheeded.

The council had been receiving notices of hearing from the NTC regarding the applications filed by different media entities to operate digital television broadcast stations in the city but these were all rejected because of the non-appearance in the hearings.

The operation of digital television in the city would have given residents here access to clear and free digital channels. So far, only analog TV signals are available in the city from free-to-air TV channels and those provided by cable firms.
