GoPro expects brisk sales for next-gen action cameras

Tech firm GoPro is expecting brisk sales for its next-generation action cameras in the last quarter of 2019. The company recently launched two new action cameras for the local market which are now available on a pre-order basis.

However, the company did not disclose figures for the Philippine market, saying only that it is expecting sales to jump with the two new cameras – the GoPro Hero 8 Black and GoPro Max — which are both packed with new features.

Ron Ng, GoPro regional trainer for Southeast Asia and India, said the company is optimistic with the new products, which are targeted toward mass consumers and video-bloggers or vloggers.

Ng, along with GoPro local distributor Moduvi Inc., recently unveiled the two new products which will be available in local stores by November.

Some of the features include HyperSmooth 2.0 video stabilization, which according to Ng, is a dramatically improved stabilization feature over HyperSmooth 1.0. This feature is available in all the new models.

The executive explained that “hypersmooth” allows for still and video shots to remain stable even if the user is in motion. Essentially, this feature radically reduces shakes and motion blur. This compliments an enhanced horizon leveling feature (horizon lock), particularly for video shoots to ensure high quality footages.

Other features include enhanced audio with 6 microphones for the GoPro Hero 8 Black and  “shotgun microphone” for the high-end GoPro Max.

GoPro Hero 8 is a direct upgrade of the previous GoPro Hero 7, while the high-end GoPro Max is said to be the next-generation version of the previous GoPro Fusion.

One of the main differences of the two new models are the built-in cameras. The GoPro Hero 8 Black can record 4K videos with a single camera, while the GoPro Max uses a single lens and a separate 360-degree camera.

Interestingly, the cameras in the GoPro Max allows users to set the still camera setting to different “views” including “Narrow,” “Linear,” “Wide,” and “Super Wide.”

To further enhance still and video footages, GoPro has also announced that GoPro Mods, a set of add-ons that can be bought separately. These include a separate monitors, LED lighting, and additional storage.

GoPro has also introduced a new software application for the new cameras, which it said, allows camera users new and more powerful editing tools for their footages and still photos.

Local pricing for the two new cameras was not disclosed, although pricing for the GoPro Hero8 Black is said to be close to P24,000, while the GoPro Max is priced about P30,000.
