Long road trips are often the best way to assess how a vehicle performs in real-world conditions. For our journey from Manila to Cagayan and back, the Ford Next-Generation Ranger Raptor served as a practical long-distance companion, offering a mix of power, technology, and everyday usability.
We left Manila at around 4:00 in the morning, heading toward Talavera, Nueva Ecija. By sunrise, the Raptor was already settled into highway cruising.
It is powered by a 2.0-liter Bi-Turbo diesel engine producing around 210 PS and 500 Nm of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. This setup made overtaking slower vehicles relatively easy, especially on open stretches of road.

Gear shifts were smooth and unobtrusive, and the permanent four-wheel-drive system helped maintain stability on uneven provincial highways.
Tech and Connectivity on the Road
As we passed through Nueva Ecija and Nueva Vizcaya, the cabin became our main workspace on wheels. The SYNC 4A infotainment system, with its large portrait touchscreen, provided clear navigation and easy access to calls and music.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto worked reliably, eliminating the need for cables. USB ports and voice controls were also convenient during long drives.
I wasn’t able to fully explore FordPass Connectivity during the trip, but it offers remote functions such as vehicle monitoring and door locking through a smartphone app.

Approaching Isabela and Piat, Cagayan, traffic became heavier. Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go and Lane Centering helped reduce fatigue, while the 360-degree camera proved useful in tight parking areas.
The front seats remained supportive over long hours. However, passengers at the back noted that rear legroom was somewhat limited, especially for taller adults on extended drives.
Safety and Driver Assistance
On winding roads and congested highways, the Raptor’s safety features were noticeable without being intrusive.
Forward Collision Warning with Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, Evasive Steer Assist, and Reverse Brake Assist worked in the background to support the driver.

There were also moments when the system suggested taking a break after prolonged driving, which was helpful on longer stretches.
Standard features such as ABS with EBD, traction and stability control, hill start and descent control, and automatic high beams added to overall driving confidence.
Off-Road Driving in Cagayan
The more demanding part of the trip came in remote areas of Gattaran near the Sierra Madre. While many roads were already paved, some sections remained rocky and dusty.

The selectable terrain modes allowed the truck to adapt to changing surfaces, improving traction and throttle response.
On gravel paths and shallow river crossings, the Raptor maintained steady progress without drama. The suspension handled uneven surfaces well, and the drivetrain provided enough grip on slippery sections.
Living With the Raptor on Multi-Day Trips
Over several days in Tuguegarao and Gattaran, the Raptor proved easy to live with. Cabin noise was well controlled, and daily starts and stops were hassle-free.

Trips to local markets, tourist spots, and shopping centers highlighted its flexibility as both a utility vehicle and a family transporter. While it attracted some attention, it remained practical for everyday use.
Return Drive to Manila
The return trip tested endurance more than performance. With stable handling, cruise control, and supportive front seats, the drive remained manageable despite the long distance.
Fatigue was still inevitable, but the Raptor’s driver-assist features helped make the journey less stressful.

Verdict: A Capable Long-Distance Pickup
The Ford Next-Generation Ranger Raptor 2.0L Bi-Turbo 4×4 AT performed well across highways, rural roads, and light off-road conditions. Its main strengths include:
- Strong and consistent diesel performance
- Smooth 10-speed automatic transmission
- User-friendly infotainment system
- Comprehensive safety features
- Effective off-road capability
While rear-seat space could be more generous for long trips, especially for taller passengers, the Raptor remains a solid choice for drivers who need both daily usability and occasional off-road performance.
