REVIEW | nubia V80 Max smartphone

Smartphone manufacturer nubia had just released its latest model, which stands out as a strong contender for the toughest and most affordable phone in the market.

The new nubia V80 Max aims to provide durability without breaking the bank, and Newsbytes.PH had the opportunity to put it to the test to see if it truly lives up to its motto, “Built to the Max!”

Display

The nubia V80 Max features a wide 6.9-inch IPS LCD screen with a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. While this promises a smoother visual experience for daily tasks, the display’s resolution is somewhat lacking at only 1640×720 pixels.

Coupled with a peak brightness of 780 nits, it performs adequately under bright conditions but may not satisfy users seeking high-resolution displays for media consumption.

Durability

One of the standout features of the V80 Max is its durability. TUV-certified for drops up to 1.8 meters, it offers reassurance for users in everyday scenarios.

With an IP64 rating for dust and water resistance, it’s equipped to handle the typical weather conditions in the Philippines and more. The display is protected by reinforced glass, providing an extra layer of safety, though it’s worth noting that the chassis is crafted from plastic.

Charging and Battery

Powering the device is a 6,000 mAh battery, complemented by 22.5W fast charging capabilities. The battery management system employs AI-assisted features such as bypass and night charging to prolong battery health.

In practical testing with PC Mark Work 3.0, the phone lasted 16 hours and 28 minutes during routine tasks, marking it as a reliable choice for those on the go. Furthermore, it supports 10W reverse charging, enabling users to charge other devices.

Performance

The nubia V80 Max is equipped with the Unisoc T7250 Octa-core processor. While this might be entry-level, it capably handles typical smartphone tasks and everyday applications.

The device offers a single memory configuration of 8GB of dynamic RAM, expandable to 16GB, which should suffice for most users. However, the built-in 128GB storage may feel limiting for content creators, though the microSD option offers a way to expand storage.

Running the processor through the Geekbench 6 benchmarking, yielded a single-core score of 436 and a multi-core score of 1,458.

Geekbench 6 CPU score

Its integrated Mali-G57 MP1 GPU achieved a score of 715, showing that while it can run mid-level games like Mad Out 2, the experience may involve some lag and grainy visuals, especially at higher settings.

The processor is also capable of AI functions, though at a limited capacity. Achieving only a quantized score of 293 in Geekbench AI, it could run basic tools that comes with the phone, but it takes some time to process the requsts.

Camera

In the photography department, the nubia V80 Max boasts a 50MP AI triple camera setup at the back and a 16MP selfie camera. While both cameras can produce decent images, especially in well-lit environments, they tend to struggle with darker colors, resulting in grainy photos.

Unfortunately, despite offering AI filters for photography, the device lacks any onboard AI image editing software.
