Network tweaks improve Messenger calls nationwide — Smart

Smart Communications said a joint network optimization effort with Ericsson and Meta has improved voice and video call quality on Messenger for users in the Philippines.

The initiative involved fine-tuning technical parameters in Smart’s live network, initially in Luzon, resulting in reduced delays and fewer disruptions in real-time calls. The improvements also benefited other calling applications, not just Messenger.

According to Smart, Messenger calls now experience 24.6% lower round-trip time (RTT), 55% lower packet loss, and nearly 20% higher video bitrate, leading to clearer audio and more stable video calls.

“The initiative with Ericsson and Meta aligns with our commitment to delivering exceptional service quality to all our customers,” said Debbie M. Hu, head of network at Smart Communications.

“These improvements mean their video calls over Messenger are sharper, and they can enjoy continuous calls with their loved ones. We are grateful for this opportunity to turn innovation into everyday excellence, to the benefit of our customers.”

Ericsson said the collaboration highlights the role of coordinated efforts between network operators and platform providers in improving user experience.

“We’re proud to work in close partnership with Smart and Meta to optimize network performance and deliver clearer, more reliable service across the Philippines, ,” said Daniel Ode, head of Singapore, Philippines, and Brunei at Ericsson.

“This initiative demonstrates how focused global technical expertise, decades of trusted telco leadership, and platform-level coordination can come together to produce tangible, customer-facing improvements — clearer audio, fewer interruptions, and a more dependable calling experience that Filipinos can rely on every day.”
