Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson has expanded its “Connect to Learn: Teaching with Technology” program in the Philippines, aiming to strengthen the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in classrooms.
The initiative, launched in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) Muntinlupa, Philippine Normal University (PNU), Qualcomm, and Smart Communications, seeks to address gaps in teacher training highlighted in the Future of Learning Report for the Philippines (2024) by GSMA. The study cited insufficient capacity building as a key barrier to technology integration in education.
Since its introduction in 2022, the program has trained more than 1,700 pre-service and in-service teachers, equipping them with ICT skills to improve lesson delivery and foster interactive, collaborative learning.
An evaluation by Ericsson reported notable improvements in how educators incorporated digital tools into classroom practices.
On Sept. 2, partners launched the second phase of the program, which will extend training to high school teachers in DepEd Muntinlupa and preschool educators at PNU. This phase introduces new e-learning modules and immersive virtual reality (VR) simulations tailored for local classrooms.
As part of the rollout, Ericsson donated VR headsets to DepEd Muntinlupa and PNU, while Smart Communications provided pocket WiFi devices, home WiFi units, and prepaid load cards to boost connectivity. The training will continue to focus on core subjects including English, math, and science.
Arda Cetiner, Ericsson country manager for the Philippines, said the company is committed to embedding technology into teaching nationwide.
“This aligns well with Ericsson’s vision of a world where limitless connectivity improves lives, redefines business, and pioneers a sustainable future,” he said.
