The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) has unveiled the PhilSysQR Code Verification System that would authenticate the embedded QR code in the Philippine ID system.
The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said it is set to launch a mobile version of the PhilID as a digital alternative to the physical PhilID card to maximize the use of the PhilSys in digital transactions.
The BSP made the pronouncement following reports that local banks are refusing to accept the PhilSys ID as a valid proof of identity because it does not feature a signature of the ID holder.
Meanwhile, state-run Land Bank of the Philippines said it has onboarded 5.3 million unbanked PhilSys registrants for their own transaction accounts through account opening booths at select PhilSys co-location areas nationwide.
The government has succeeded in selling the idea of a secure, comprehensive ID system that is supposedly long overdue and only has good things to bring to this country. On that premise, the people must hold it to its word and, if necessary, take it to task.
Data privacy advocates raised a howl on Thursday, May 27, against the supposed Landbank account that “comes” with every registration of the PhilSys ID, also known as the nation ID.
The government said it will relaunch the multi-billion Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) after it crashed due to the sheer number of Filipinos wanting to register during its launch last April 30.
According to the complaint filed at the Office of the Ombudsman, the BSP violated the Government Procurement Reform Act (GPRA) when it required a specific brand -- OVD Kinegram AD -- for the materials to be used in the cards.
The PSA said Philippine identification (PhilID), which will be given free of charge, will not replace the existing functional IDs that serve other purposes.
