"Deepfake" is particularly frightening because it has the potential to produce fake video and audio clips for cybercriminals to illegally connect money from individuals, government institutions, and private companies globally.

Trend Micro's local workforce has grown from just 14 engineers when it was established in the Philippines in 1998 to over 1,000 to date. That is about 17 percent of the firm's current total global workforce of around 6,000 employees.

The report warned that attackers will add more sophisticated elements to attacks to take advantage of the changing technology landscape.

Each year since 2016, Trend Micro has been hosting conferences and talks on the current security trends that companies and individuals should look out for. This year, it is again holding its annual event -- dubbed ?Security Trends 2018? -- with the topic focusing on data breaches.

Defenses must evolve and match the attacks by cybercriminals as the world of technology is rapidly changing.
