Pop Tech | Remember this Matrix-inspired phone?

These days, smartphone models seem to be produced in a fast and furious pace. There’s always something new from every gadget company. When it comes to smartphones, we are no longer in the “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” phase. We’re in the era of making our smartphones do everything ? so much so that it has become and extension of both our personal and professional lives. It has become an acquired need. Many of us seem to be tethered to our smartphones.

In 1999, Warner Bros. scored a hit with The Matrix, which starred Keanu Reeves. It spawned the Matrix franchise with The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions in 2003. That same year, the Samsung SPH-N270 was unveiled in 2003. It was specifically made to resemble the phone used in The Matrix Reloaded.

Indeed, the Samsung SPH-N270 was officially tagged as Matrix merchandise. The clip below features the ads of products associated with the Matrix movies. The are included in the movie franchise’s 2003 2-Disc DVD release.

It may be recalled that the Nokia 8110 was the featured phone in the first Matrix film. However, the Nokia 8110 was an existing phone. The Samsung SPH-N270, on the other hand, was created specifically to be Matrix merch.

Blogger Connor Classen Behan recalls: “In 2003, when The Matrix Reloaded came out, 2,500 of these phones were made and sold for $500 each to promote the movie. Mine is number 551.”

However, the Samsung SPH-N270 didn’t really become a hot commodity. Behan went on to write: “Everyone who knows about the N270 either thinks it is the ugliest phone ever or the sexiest phone ever. My opinion is obviously the latter.”

Then again, some gadget reviewers have even labeled the Samsung SPH-N270 as “the ugliest phone Samsung ever made.” We think that is a bit unfair. Sure, it looks more like a taser than a phone, but that is part of its charm. Sadly, the Samsung SPH-N270 was discontinued in 2006. We kind of wish they would bring it back.
