Digital Love Scene | Top 3 lies in online dating profiles

Online dating presents a lot of challenges. Aside from security concerns, one has to contend with a whole lot of variables. Lies are among those variables.

Among of the popular studies done on this subject is the one by researchers at Cornell University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The results of the study by Nicole Ellison, Jeffrey T. Hancock, and Catalina Toma were detailed in the 2007 paper titled “The truth about lying in online dating profiles.”

The online dating scene may have welcomed new players such as Tinder, Happn, Bumble, OkCupid, and so on. However, people habits have remained nthe same ? especially when it comes to what they lie about in their profiles.

The study done by Ellison, Hancock, and Toma had revealed that “deception was indeed frequently observed” among people seeking love online. Below are the popular lying points:

1. Weight
2. Height
3. Age

Apparently, to make themselves look appealing to more prospective partners, many online dating fans project themselves as lighter, taller, and younger. In his aptly named Psychology Today column called Love, Digitally, Martin Graff Martin Graff, Ph.D. ? a principal lecturer in Psychology at the University of South Wales ? lists four indicators that your online relationship will have a great chance at real life happiness. These indicators are all built on the premise that the people involved are not telling lies.

The paper by Ellison, Hancock, and Toma likewise quoted Erving Goffman, author of The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, who said: “The packaging and editing of the self in order to make favorable impressions upon others is an essential and ubiquitous component of social interaction. This process of self-presentation.”

That said, maybe self-presentation should include telling the truth.
