PayMaya QR now accepted in select McDonald’s branches

Customers of fast-food chain McDonald’s can now enjoy the convenience of using PayMaya QR as an alternative payment option.

The QR payment system will initially be available at the recently re-opened McDonald’s branch at the corner of 32nd street and 5th avenue in BGC in Taguig City.

The rollout of QR payment, which will be added on top of the self-ordering kiosks, is also set to reach McDonald’s other NxtGen stores across the country in the coming months. The project aims to digitize the dining and payment experience of its customers, as well as enable more seamless transactions.

According to McDonald’s Philippines president and CEO Kenneth Yang, there has been a positive feedback when it comes to the customer experience in NxtGen branches.

“With our expanded collaboration with PayMaya through QR payment on top of card acceptance in our stores, we are able to offer another convenient way for our customers to pay for their favorites,” Yang added.

The QR payment rollout comes as an extended effort from a previous tie-up where McDonald’s accommodated Visa, Mastercard, and JCB credit cards, as well as debit and prepaid card payments, through the self-ordering terminal present in NxtGen stores.

PayMaya founder and CEO Orlando Vea said continuous collaboration with retailers and now with the food industry is part of its goal to create a more inclusive financial environment on the national level.

“We congratulate McDonald’s for being one of the trailblazers in pushing for innovations in the quick-service restaurant industry, and our expanded partnership with them brings the payment experience of customers to a whole new level,” Vea said.

The new initiative has been recognized by the Bangko Sentral ng Piilipinas (BSP) as a supporting element for the National Retail Payments System (NRPS) initiative which is targeting a higher usage of digital transactions in the Philippines. As a show of support, BSP governor Benjamin Diokno was also present at the launch.

Diokno remarked that as more empowered consumers and businesses adopt digital payments, wide access to financial services is also promoted and helps lead the economy to be more inclusive and sustainable.

“We, at the BSP, acknowledge the crucial role the private sector plays in driving the digital transactions in the country. Together with the government and key industry enablers, we must work hand-in-hand towards our common goal of increasing electronic payment transactions in the country to 20% by next year,” said Diokno.

Customers who want to skip the long lines at the counter can simply whip out their phone and open the PayMaya app, scan the QR code that appears after they selected their order, and wait for order to be fulfilled.

With the QR option, McDonald’s purchases can also now be included in PayMaya’s regular cashback promos, making a customer’s order of a one-piece chicken, as an example, bring an instant 100% rebate.
