Virtualization software firm VMware has announced the appointment of Walter So as the new country manager for the Philippines.

New VMware Philippines country manager Walter So

So joins VMware from a 14-year career at IBM where he last served as the general manager for global technology services. He replaces Victor Silvino, also a former IBMer who is now the head of auction house Salcedo Auctions.

In his new role, So will lead VMware’s business development and strategy in the Philippines, while strengthening the company’s local presence and customer relationships.

He will also oversee sales and channel operations, supporting enterprises’ adoption of VMware’s hybrid cloud solutions, software-defined data centre and end-user computing offerings as they scale and grow in Philippine’s fast-growing digital economy, projected to grow 12-fold between now and 2030.

“Digital transformation remains a key priority for enterprises in the Philippines as they heed the government’s call to digitalize and innovate. Walter’s appointment will strengthen VMware’s ability to deliver cutting edge solutions to businesses in Philippines, enabling them to ride the waves of digital disruption and compete in the digital economy,” said Sanjay K. Deshmukh, vice president and managing director for Southeast Asia and Korea at VMware.

“With his extensive experience in driving growth and innovation across organizations he has led, we are excited that what Walter has to offer to will be a good fit for VMware’s business in the Philippines, enabling us to play a leading role in supporting the country’s businesses towards a digital future.”

“I would also like to thank outgoing country manager Victor Silvino for his leadership over the past two years. Victor has been integral to the business growth in the Philippines, and accelerating enterprise transformation across industries,” added Deshmukh.

Prior to joining VMware, So held various leadership positions within IBM including as global technology services general manager, where he oversaw the sales and delivery of 70 percent of IBM’s business in the Philippines.

During his four-year term as IBM’s infrastructure services country manager, So was credited with helping double the business for infrastructure services products, including hybrid cloud, digital workplace, cyber resiliency, security services and network. Apart from IBM, Walter has also served in various positions in HSBC, Nikon, and the Ramcar Group of Companies.

“I am thrilled to be able to join the VMware family at this exciting time of immense digital transformation for the Philippines. The country’s digital economy is on the rise, and at VMware, we are committed to building a robust digital foundation for organizations, helping them in their pursuit of what’s possible in the digital future of tomorrow,” said So.

So graduated from Ateneo de Manila University with a Bachelor of Science majoring in Management Engineering with a minor in Finance.
