Study: Cybersecurity success doesn’t rely solely on buying technology

UK-based cybersecurity firm Sophos recently announced the results of “The Future of Cybersecurity in Asia Pacific and Japan — Culture, Efficiency, Awareness” study conducted by Tech Research Asia.

The research data is based on the results of a quantitative survey from 900 respondents across Australia, India, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore. Qualitative insights were also gathered through five executive roundtables in the first four countries.

The study revealed that the cybersecurity investment success rate of organizations does not depend solely on buying technology, but rather by recognizing the role of corporate culture, employee education, and path-to-purchase trends in achieving it.

According to Sumit Bansal — Sophos managing director for ASEAN and Korea — the study aims to gauge what their customers and partners, as well as the market in its entirety, think in terms of being aware and understanding security in their organizations. He also noted that Sophos is well on its way in evolving to a security leader for the generations to come.

In the Philippines alone, 64% of decision-makers in businesses observe a deficiency in their security expertise and 62% boils it down to lack of skilled professionals in the industry. The shortage of security expertise is primarily caused by an insufficient budget allocated for cybersecurity.

In fact, 78% of local organizations see that educating employees and leadership, as well as improving cybersecurity awareness will be a major challenge in the next 24 months. Meanwhile, three in every four organizations, foresee an increasing need for the services provided by external security partners.

“If customers are using the cloud to digitally transform their business, we are there to protect that data for them and protect their business from being threatened. We are the leader in endpoint protection as well as network security,” said Bansal.

He also mentioned that Sophos introduced the concept of synchronized security where each solution (i.e. endpoint, mobile, cloud security) can both operate as a standalone and share data with one another to automate threat detection, investigation, and remediation. This feature is built-in and not a separate product as well.

For the local IT channels, 35% of the respondents are looking for a partner that understands their business. Also, 45% of them require an end-to-end support. But with the demand increasing and the range of businesses widening, Philippine organizations are positioning to engage vendors and service providers on multi-year contracts for holistic and licensing solutions instead of traditional outsourcing contracts.

Bansal explained, “We release threat landscape reports every six months. The trend keeps changing. Customers face a challenge in keeping up to date with what kind of threats they’re seeing in the marketplace, what they should be aware of, and also how they grow their business.”
