US defense contractor Lockheed Martin has secured a contract with the Department of National Defense (DND) to supply flight simulation and maintenance training systems for the Philippine Air Force’s (PAF) fleet of S-70 Black Hawk helicopters.
The agreement, announced on Thursday, Oct. 8, covers the delivery of a full-motion flight simulator, a virtual maintenance trainer, and accompanying instructional materials designed to allow Filipino pilots and maintenance personnel to undergo training locally.
The contract also includes spare parts and maintenance support through August 2028. Lockheed Martin did not disclose the value of the agreement or the delivery schedule for the training equipment.
The acquisition is expected to help the PAF establish its own Black Hawk training capability, reducing its reliance on overseas facilities as it expands its helicopter fleet.
Currently, PAF pilots undergo Black Hawk training at the Sikorsky Training Academy in the United States. The arrangement will continue while the local training facilities are being established.
The full-motion simulator uses digital twin technology to replicate the aircraft’s flight characteristics, cockpit environment, and operating conditions, allowing pilots to practice various flight scenarios without using an actual helicopter.
Meanwhile, the virtual maintenance trainer uses three-dimensional, physics-based simulations of aircraft systems, including hydraulics and avionics, to help maintenance personnel practice inspection, troubleshooting, and repair procedures.
The training equipment is intended to support the PAF’s growing Black Hawk fleet, which is used for troop transport, search-and-rescue operations, humanitarian assistance, disaster response, and firefighting missions across the Philippines.
“It’s a privilege to partner with the Philippine Air Force with a suite of systems to support their training requirements as they grow their fleet of S-70 Black Hawk helicopters,” said Tim James, vice president of Air and Commercial Solutions at Lockheed Martin.
“This contract award is a long-term investment in the PAF’s mission readiness and reflects Lockheed Martin’s proven ability to deliver sustainment solutions across the entire operational pipeline.”
The agreement represents the first order for Lockheed Martin’s S-70 Black Hawk training devices, which range from desktop-based instructional systems to immersive simulation environments.
According to the company, its digital twin technology creates virtual representations of the helicopter’s components, configurations, and operating systems, allowing training software to be updated as aircraft systems are modified.
Lockheed Martin also provides simulation and training systems for other military aircraft, including the CH-53K heavy-lift helicopter, F-35 and F-16 fighter jets, and C-130J transport aircraft.
The Philippines operates Polish-built Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawk helicopters as part of its military modernization program, with the aircraft serving as a key component of the PAF’s transport and disaster-response capabilities.
The new training systems are expected to provide the PAF with additional capacity to train aircrews and maintenance personnel domestically as more Black Hawk helicopters enter service.
