Data protection takes center stage as AI adoption expands in PH

The growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the Philippines is reshaping industries and creating new challenges in data security, according to discussions at the AIBP Summit Philippines 2025.

While AI is driving digital transformation and innovation, it is also producing larger volumes of sensitive data that must be safeguarded.

The 2024 Philippine Threat Landscape Report noted that evolving cyber threats have increasingly targeted the finance, government, education, and telecommunications sectors.

These incidents highlight the need for stronger safeguards, compliance with data protection standards, and improved strategies to maintain business continuity.

Recent cases have underscored the stakes. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas estimated that financial institutions under its supervision lost $5.82 billion to cyber incidents in 2024. In the same year, the state-run health insurance agency suffered a breach involving 750 gigabytes of sensitive information.

Industry leaders at the summit pointed out that ransomware attacks, regulatory pressures, and the financial costs of downtime are pushing organizations to adopt more resilient IT infrastructures.

Data recovery and business continuity planning are becoming integral to sustaining digital growth, alongside traditional cybersecurity measures.

Tech firm Synology, which joined the event as a gold sponsor, said businesses must view data protection as a foundation for digital innovation.

Synology said it has been working with organizations in the region to streamline IT operations through integrated storage, backup, and data management systems.

The company highlighted its ActiveProtect solution, which is designed to help businesses centralize data protection, secure workloads, and enable recovery in case of disruptions.

“Businesses across the Philippines are embracing digital transformation at a rapid pace, but with this progress comes heightened responsibility to protect data,” said Claire Huang, Synology’s country manager for the Philippines.
