Report: PH among world’s most connected and digitally empowered nations

The Philippines continues to cement its reputation as one of the world’s most digitally active and socially connected nations, according to the newly released “Digital 2026: Philippines Report” by Meltwater and We Are Social.

The annual report highlights the country’s rapid digital evolution — driven by near-universal smartphone access, thriving social media engagement, and the widespread adoption of digital finance.

With 98 million Internet users and 95.8 million social media identities, the Philippines has registered a 10.3% year-on-year increase, underscoring the nation’s growing integration of technology into daily life.

With 98.6% smartphone ownership, digital access in the country is now almost universal. Filipinos spend more than 20 hours a week watching videos online — twice the time spent on traditional TV — reflecting the shift toward mobile-first, on-demand entertainment.

Streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video remain popular, but local creators and influencers continue to dominate the cultural landscape.

The most consumed online content includes music videos (76.3%), comedic or viral videos (58.1%), and influencer vlogs (47.8%), reinforcing the Philippines’ reputation as a vibrant social nation that values creativity and connection.

The Digital 2026 report also reveals how digital finance is powering participation in the country’s online economy. Over 56% of Filipinos make at least one online purchase weekly, with total spending across electronics, food, and fashion reaching ₱487.5 billion ($8.24 billion) this year.

Digital wallets such as GCash and Maya lead as the top payment methods, accounting for 39% of all online transactions, followed by credit and debit cards at 27%.

This surge in e-wallet adoption has been crucial in promoting financial inclusion, especially among the nearly half of Filipinos who remain unbanked.

Beyond e-commerce, 88.5% of Filipinos now use digital platforms for banking, investments, or insurance each month — signaling growing trust in managing finances and everyday transactions online.

Mimrah Mahmood, Asia Pacific vice president of Meltwater, noted that the findings reflect a maturing digital behavior among Filipinos.

“Filipinos have long been recognized as one of the most digitally active nations, and our 2026 data reaffirms that. What stands out this year is how digital behavior has matured — moving beyond streaming and social engagement into e-commerce and digital finance. The Philippines is no longer just connected but empowered by the tools people use every day,” Mahmood said.

The report concludes that as digital inclusion deepens, the Philippines is transitioning from a connected society into an empowered digital economy, where technology fuels creativity, innovation, and opportunity across communities.
