NTC clears Globe to offer Starlink satellite-to-mobile connectivity

Globe Telecom has launched Starlink’s satellite-to-mobile service in the Philippines after receiving approval from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), making it the first local telecommunications provider authorized to commercially offer direct-to-device satellite connectivity.

The service allows compatible Globe subscribers to access voice, video and messaging over apps and SMS by connecting directly to Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellites when outside the reach of terrestrial mobile networks.

Globe said the technology is designed to provide connectivity in remote areas and during emergencies when conventional cell towers are unavailable.

According to the NTC approval, the commercial rollout supports the government’s goal of advancing digital transformation and expanding connectivity in underserved communities.

The service requires a compatible LTE smartphone and an active Globe SIM enrolled in a Globe Starlink plan. Globe said prepaid and TM subscribers can access the service starting at P99, while it is included for Globe Platinum and postpaid subscribers on Plan 1499 and higher.

The service currently supports essential messaging, navigation applications and SMS. iPhone support is not yet available.

Globe said the platform has already been deployed in South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake, marking its first disaster-response use case in the country.

The company said the deployment supported emergency communications for more than 150,000 customers.

“This new satellite-to-mobile technology enhances digital inclusion and accessibility,” said Carl Cruz, president and CEO of Globe.

“Given the NTC’s approval for commercial launch, Globe can now extend its reach beyond traditional towers, ensuring that even in the most remote or disaster-stricken areas, Filipinos remain connected. This milestone reinforces our commitment to uplift lives, support businesses, and keep the nation connected.”
