Trends, Cyble warn PH firms of rising AI-driven cyber threats

Local tech distributor Trends & Technologies and cybersecurity firm Cyble warned Philippine enterprises and government agencies of escalating cyber threats, including a sharp rise in phishing attacks linked to generative AI, during a cybersecurity briefing in Makati City on June 18.

The event, titled “Defining the Era of Control: AI-Driven Threat Intelligence for the Next Generation”, gathered representatives from sectors such as telecommunications, banking and finance, healthcare, manufacturing, real estate, and government to discuss how organizations can shift from reactive cybersecurity measures to more proactive threat detection.

Leo Alvyn Cruz, operations senior manager for managed ICT services at Trends, said cyberattacks are becoming faster and more expensive for businesses.

“Cybersecurity threats are moving faster than ever before, making breaches costlier both operationally and financially,” Cruz said.

“We’ve partnered with Cyble for this focused session because of their expertise and emphasis on AI-driven, real time threat intelligence, and we agree: when threats move faster than a business’s visibility on them, the real impact and vulnerability will never be fully understood in time for a response. Waiting for an alert inside your network means you’re already behind. True defense means looking outward, finding those risks, and neutralizing them before they ever have a chance to disrupt the business or hit the bottom line.”

Cyble director for global GSI and MSSP business Kapil Barman cited a 1,265% increase in phishing activities via generative AI and said the average cost of an AI-powered breach has reached $5.72 million.

He also said the average time to detect a breach remains at 181 days, while global ransomware recovery costs average $1.5 million.

“With global ransomware recovery costs benchmarked at an average of $1.5 million, and the average time to detect a breach sitting at 181 days, enterprises need more advanced capabilities,” Barman said.

Barman said organizations need broader visibility into emerging threats and adversary activity as cyber risks become more complex.

“In line with our theme, we urge organizations and tech leaders to define this new era of control. The digital landscape is becoming increasingly complex, and they face more sophisticated cyber risks. More than ever, security teams need holistic visibility into emerging threats and adversary activity in order for them to prioritize and respond effectively. And, more than ever, businesses need strong cyber threat intelligence solutions partners to increase their resilience and have proactive defense,” he said.
