Google rolls out free AI training for Pinoy teachers

Google Philippines has partnered with the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to offer free artificial intelligence training for Filipino educators.

The Google AI Educator Series (GES) provides self-paced online modules that take 15 to 45 minutes to complete. The training covers the use of AI tools for classroom instruction, administrative tasks, research, and problem-solving activities.

Participants can earn digital badges as they complete the modules, which include lessons on creating interactive learning experiences through simulations and real-world scenarios.

One module introduces Gemini’s Guided Learning feature, which uses Socratic-style guidance to help students work through complex problems.

Another, Planning the Inquiry, demonstrates how Gemini’s Deep Research feature can support students conducting research for academic papers and theses.

The training also covers prompt engineering, data privacy, academic integrity, and the safe, ethical, and responsible use of AI in classrooms.

Google is working with the three government agencies to make the program available across basic, higher, and technical-vocational education.

For DepEd, the GES has been available through the Bureau of Learning Delivery Hub since Sept. 28. A joint circular is expected to formally endorse the platform nationwide.

Accreditation by the National Educators Academy of the Philippines will allow participants to earn Continuing Professional Development credit units required for Professional Regulation Commission license renewal.

CHED will issue an advisory informing higher education institutions that the GES is an optional professional development resource. The initiative is aligned with CHED Memorandum Order No. 21, series of 2026, which covers the responsible adoption and use of AI in higher education.

TESDA has integrated the training into the TESDA Online Program, its free e-learning platform. The initiative also complements the agency’s existing guidelines on AI and micro-credentials.

Google Philippines country manager Prep Palacios said the program aims to help educators use AI while keeping teachers central to the learning process.

“Learning is central to everything we do at Google, and our commitment to Philippine education has always been a top priority,” Palacios said.

“We know that while AI is transforming both education and educators, technology is a tool that supports the physical and mental capacities of our teachers in their work.”

Palacios said the program builds on Google’s ongoing effort to train one million DepEd educators. The new series focuses on shorter, practical lessons intended to reduce administrative workloads while keeping teaching, pedagogy, and human interaction at the center of education.
