First female chief of Microsoft PH leaving; Frenchman to take over

Software colossus Microsoft has confirmed that Karrie Ilagan, the first woman to lead the company’s Philippine subsidiary, is leaving her post and will be replaced by a French national named Bertrand Launay.

“After five years as managing director and 11 years in total tenure, Karrie Ilagan will be leaving Microsoft to spend more time with her family and other personal projects,” the company said in a statement.

The local Microsoft office also said that Launay, an industry business veteran with over 30 years experience, will assume Ilagan’s post as managing director. Prior to his new role, Launay was chief operating officer of Microsoft India and vice president for small and mid market solutions and partners (SMSP) in Asia.

Also leaving the company is top executive Joel Garcia, who held the post of director of developer evangelism.

An industry source said that just like in 2009 when Microsoft laid off key officials, the company gave generous severance packages to the affected employees who received a two-month pay for every year of service. This is way above the minimum standard set by the law at one-half month pay per year of employment.

Before her appointment as managing director of Microsoft Philippines, Ilagan was the company’s enterprise sales director. She led the Microsoft Philippines marketing team for three years, where she oversaw marketing planning and operations, as well as the launch of Windows Vista, Office 2007, Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008.
