REVIEW | Territory Hybrid Titanium X mid-size SUV

Newsbytes.PH had the opportunity to test Ford’s new Territory Hybrid Titanium X during a media drive to Baguio held on October 2 and 3, organized by Ford Philippines.

The fully hybrid mid-size SUVs were put to the test on a round-trip journey from Manila to Baguio and back, covering a challenging 600 kilometers that required strong performance to navigate steep, winding roads. The event allowed media participants to experience firsthand the SUV’s versatility, efficiency, and exceptional handling.

Look and Design

Visually, the new Territory Hybrid does not differ significantly from the previous 2024 Territory with an internal combustion engine (ICE). The most striking visual feature is the Coast-to-Coast LED bar along the grille, which includes an illuminated Ford emblem.

Engine

The Territory Hybrid is equipped with a 1.5L Turbocharged I-4 Dedicated Hybrid Engine, capable of delivering 150 PS of power and 230 Nm of torque when using only the ICE. The electric motor adds an impressive 218 PS of power and 315 Nm of torque.

The electric motor is powered by a 1.83 kWh lithium-ion battery using nickel, cobalt, and manganese (NCM), which is charged by the generator and ICE or through regenerative braking when the vehicle slows down or coasts to a stop.

The powertrain is paired with a 2-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission, which seamlessly switches between four power modes. Depending on driving conditions, the SUV can operate in full-electric mode or alternate between the gas engine and electric motor.

The built-in software automatically switches between power modes to suit driving conditions. Although this simplifies the driving experience, having the option to manually select full-electric or full-gas engine mode would enhance driver control.

Fuel Efficiency and Performance

The hybrid engine setup allows for responsive acceleration on flat roads, with torque providing ample power even in tight turns. This represents an improvement over the 2024 Territory, which exhibited noticeable lag between accelerator input and response.

Ford has also reduced brake sensitivity compared to last year’s model. Additionally, the charging mechanism assists with engine braking, resulting in a smoother driving experience.

Notably, the Territory Hybrid demonstrates exceptional fuel efficiency. During the 300 km drive from Baguio to Manila, the vehicle consumed only a quarter of its fuel tank, thanks to the electric motor and efficient charging system.

While the Territory Hybrid has a rated fuel economy of 19.6 km/L, it can easily reach 20 km/L, depending on driving style.

Driver Assist

While driving on highways and winding roads, drivers can take advantage of the Territory Hybrid Titanium X’s Advanced Driver-Assist Systems (ADAS), which include Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Aid. These features significantly reduce driving fatigue, especially during long trips.

The 360° sensors, carried over from the 2024 model, remain highly sensitive to surrounding objects, sounding an alarm if something gets too close — useful when driving through the crowded streets of Metro Manila.

The vehicle showcased excellent handling and stability, particularly during the challenging ascents and descents in Baguio. The customizable steering feel allows drivers to choose between Comfort, Normal, or Sport modes, adjusting steering stiffness while maintaining a light, easy-to-handle feel.

On slick roads, the Territory Hybrid’s electronic stability control, traction control, and hill-assist features provided crucial support for a worry-free driving experience.

Interface

The driver-assistance functions are displayed on a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, consistent with the previous model but with several upgrades.

In the older model, activating the map or high-definition 360° camera took up half the screen, leaving only the driver console visible.

In the updated model, essential functions such as air conditioning, audio, and connectivity options remain visible around the borders of the screen even when the map is in use.

However, steering modes can only be accessed through menus, which may hinder user experience.

The instrument cluster now includes an energy utilization meter, allowing drivers to monitor power usage and battery charging status.

Additionally, the SUV features high-tech conveniences such as a wireless charging pad and an infotainment system that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

With upgraded audio systems that deliver enhanced sound quality, long drives become even more enjoyable.

Verdict

Overall, the new Ford Territory Hybrid stands out as a strong contender in the hybrid SUV market, particularly for Filipino drivers. Its combination of fuel efficiency, advanced safety features, and comfort makes it a practical choice for various driving conditions.

With its luxurious touches and smart connectivity, the Territory Hybrid is designed not only for functionality but also for an enjoyable driving experience, making it an SUV worth considering for your next adventure.

The new Territory Hybrid is offered in two variants: Trend and Titanium X. The starting price for the Territory Hybrid Trend is ₱1,399,000, while the Titanium X is priced at ₱1,599,000.

Both variants are available in Oasis Green and Crystal Pearl White (exclusive to Titanium X), Star White (exclusive to Trend), Blue Panther, and Panther Black colors.
