Viber users in the Philippines can now access ChatGPT-powered features directly within the messaging platform following a partnership between Rakuten Viber and OpenAI.
The integration allows users to interact with ChatGPT through a dedicated chat tab inside Viber without needing to leave the application.
Users can also summon ChatGPT in private and group conversations by tagging the AI assistant, enabling it to answer questions or provide suggestions within ongoing chats.
Among the new AI-powered tools available are image editing through an “Image Remix” feature, article and document summaries, chat summaries, message rewriting, and language translation. The features are available on Android and iOS, while desktop support is expected at a later date.
According to Rakuten Viber, users do not need a separate ChatGPT account to access most of the new capabilities, although creating or linking an account provides higher usage limits. Image Remix requires users to sign in to a ChatGPT account.
“We want to make everyday communication easier and more creative,” said Ofir Eyal, chief executive officer of Rakuten Viber.
“Partnering with OpenAI means we can bring ChatGPT to our users in the Philippines to add real, day-to-day value — even if they would never have sought it out on their own. Whether you’re drafting the perfect message, remixing an image, or just exploring a new idea, this is now built into the app people already use every day.”
Torben Severson, vice president and head of global business development at OpenAI, said the integration aims to bring AI assistance into a platform that users already rely on for daily communication.
“Messaging is where so much of everyday life happens. With ChatGPT in Viber, people can get helpful, creative support right in the moment, from finding the right words to catching up on busy chats or remixing a photo. We’re excited to partner with Rakuten Viber to bring these tools into an app people already use every day,” Severson said.
The companies said privacy protections remain in place, with Viber’s end-to-end encryption continuing to cover core messaging and calling functions. Only the specific text, image, or request submitted for an AI feature is sent to OpenAI for processing, according to the companies.
