OpenAI unveils ChatGPT Work for multi-step tasks across apps, files

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Work, a new agent designed to carry out multi-step tasks across connected applications, files, and other information sources and turn them into finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and websites.

The company said Work can continue operating for hours while the user is away, although actions involving external applications remain subject to user controls and approval requests.

ChatGPT Work is powered by GPT-5.6, OpenAI’s latest model family. It includes Sol, the company’s flagship model; Terra, a model positioned for everyday work; and Luna, its lowest-cost option.

The new product applies technology developed for Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent, to a broader range of professional tasks, including research, data analysis, meeting preparation, report generation, and recurring workflows.

“Across Asia Pacific, people are already using AI to turn ambition into action. ChatGPT Work brings the agentic capabilities that made Codex successful into ChatGPT, so more people — from employees to entrepreneurs — can use AI not just to get answers, but to get real work done and solve their hardest problems. Powered by GPT-5.6, ChatGPT Work combines leading intelligence and efficiency with the controls organizations need to use AI with confidence,” said Kiran Mani, managing director for Asia-Pacific at OpenAI.

OpenAI said about one billion people now use ChatGPT each week. It also reported that weekly active users of Codex have increased more than 23-fold since January, while weekly active Codex users on Enterprise plans grew more than 13-fold.

ChatGPT Work can connect to business applications through plugins, including Slack, Microsoft Teams, Gmail, Google Drive, SharePoint, calendars, customer relationship management systems, and project trackers.

It also supports scheduled tasks that run at a specified time, recur on a schedule, or monitor changes. Other capabilities include an in-app browser, website and web application creation, and computer use, which allows ChatGPT to interact with supported applications and browser interfaces.

OpenAI is also introducing an updated desktop application that brings Chat, Work, and Codex into a single interface. Chat is intended for questions, searches, and brainstorming; Work is aimed at research and multi-step projects; while Codex remains focused on coding and software development.

The desktop application is available globally on Mac and Windows, with Chat, Work, and Codex accessible to all users, including those on the Free plan.

On the Web and mobile versions, ChatGPT Work is initially available to Pro, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers. Access for Plus and Business users will be rolled out over the next few days.

OpenAI said access to specific GPT-5.6 models and processing settings will depend on the user’s subscription. Free and Go users can access GPT-5.6 Terra in Work and Codex, while paid plans will offer additional models and effort settings.

The existing ChatGPT desktop application will be renamed ChatGPT Classic and will no longer receive updates or support, according to the company.
