DIGITAL INFLUENCER | The digital buyer has changed. Have we?

E-commerce in the Philippines has transformed far beyond what many of us imagined two decades ago. What began with simple websites, online forums, and early marketplaces has evolved into a dynamic ecosystem characterized by short videos, creator-led recommendations, digital wallets, and logistics networks that span almost every corner of the country.

Today, for many, online shopping is not a special activity. It is a routine, convenient, and integral part of daily life.

Through the years, I have had the opportunity to work with MSMEs, educators, and professionals across various mentoring programs and digital transformation initiatives. These engagements allowed me to see how quickly digital habits evolve. A marketing approach that worked well a year ago may no longer be effective today.

A business model that once seemed promising can easily be overtaken by platform shifts or new consumer behavior. As I update my research and training materials for my ongoing work in e-commerce education, I found myself reflecting on why we must revisit the foundations of Philippine e-commerce with a fresh lens.

One of the biggest changes today is how we discover products. Short-form videos on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook now serve as starting points for many purchase decisions.

A few seconds of authentic storytelling can spark interest and lead viewers to search for a product or ask questions in the comments. Discovery has become fast, visual, and community-driven.

Validation, however, happens in different spaces. Many buyers still want reassurance before completing a purchase. They read marketplace reviews, browse comments, watch livestreams, and send inquiries through chat.

Even in highly digital environments, trust remains essential. Sellers who communicate clearly and respond quickly often convert far better than those relying solely on paid ads.

The transaction stage continues to evolve as well. Marketplaces remain strong because of COD options, integrated shipping, and accessible return policies. But social commerce is expanding at a rapid pace. TikTok Shop has blurred the line between content consumption and purchasing. A person can watch a video, ask questions, review community feedback, and check out a product within minutes. This seamless journey highlights how discovery and purchase have merged.

Underlying these shifts is an infrastructure that has strengthened through the years. Digital wallets are widely used. Delivery networks are more efficient. Online safety regulations and e-governance initiatives have increased trust. More MSMEs now embrace digital tools not only to stay competitive but also to sustain their businesses in a fast-changing market.

At the same time, new challenges have emerged. Competition is intense. The volume of digital content has expanded, making it harder for small sellers to stand out. Fraud schemes continue to evolve, requiring vigilance. Consumers expect faster service and clearer communication.

The growth of AI has introduced new questions about accuracy, authenticity, and the future of digital work. These realities remind us that e-commerce is about understanding people, delivering value, and adapting thoughtfully to constant change.

I recall a microentrepreneur I mentored who struggled with low sales on marketplaces. When she began answering customer questions and improved her pricing based on her annual target, rather than per product revenue. She did not rely on sophisticated tools. She relied on connection and practical business insight. Technology enables e-commerce, but people drive it.

As I reflect on the evolving digital landscape while updating my materials for students, professionals, and MSMEs, I am reminded that the Philippine e-commerce story continues to unfold. The Filipino consumer is changing. Platforms are shifting. Regulations and technologies are shaping new possibilities.

This is a good moment for entrepreneurs, teachers, and digital workers to reassess how they navigate the online market. The opportunities ahead are promising, but they require awareness, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of what customers truly value.

E-commerce will continue to progress, but its core remains rooted in trust, relevance, and authenticity. These principles guide every successful digital venture, regardless of the platform or trend. Those who stay curious, listen to their customers, and build with integrity will be best positioned to thrive.
